About Jack Van Rossum



I earned a BA degree in psychology, a California Standard Secondary Teaching Credential, and a California Community College Provisional Teaching Credential to teach Business and Real Estate. My student-teaching assignment was completed at Mendocino State Hospital in a drug rehabilitation program for adolescents (ages 13-18). As a graduate psychology student I worked with individuals and groups, providing counseling in high school, junior high, and junior college settings. For approximately eight years I was a part-time instructor at Butte Community College. The classes I taught were: Planning and Financing a Small Business, Personal Finance, and Real Estate Principals.

Titles and Licenses

I have been awarded a C.C.I.M. designation in the area of Commercial and Investment Real Estate. In the area of General Real Estate Brokerage I have earned a GRI designation. I also hold a California Insurance License, #0B70513, for Life Insurance and Variable Contracts, a California Real Estate Brokers License #00363321, a Series 7 Securities License, and a Series 24 Securities License.


I have been a licensed real estate agent since 1969 and a broker since 1975. I have worked as a real estate broker, consultant, and adviser in various capacities since obtaining my license in 1969. My father was a real estate broker and I worked in residential real estate while attending college. I have been associated with the real estate business in one form or another most of my adult life.

Since 1995 I have combined my real estate business with my family’s financial planning business.

From 1988 until 1995 I operated a “Net Branch” for Central Pacific Mortgage Company.

During 1985 I was Vice President of marketing for Bank Planning, a company which built and remodeled banks and saving & loan buildings.

During 1983 and 1984 I worked with Retail Technologies, a computer company that had developed a bar code system to operate video rental stores.

From 1976 until 1983 I owned a general real estate brokerage company. I specialized in commercial and investment real estate sales. I also operated a property management company as a part of the brokerage firm, managing single family residences, apartments, and commercial property. During this time I developed fifteen real estate investment partnerships. I also functioned as a real estate dealer/investor, and I bought and sold approximately thirty properties including single family residences, multi-family residential properties, office buildings, residential building lots, and recreational land.

From 1972 until 1975 I worked in the real estate brokerage business.

Community Interest

I have always taken an active interest in the community, as well as in any activities in which my children were involved, including karate, competitive swimming, piano, guitar, girl scouts, youth wrestling, soccer, football, baseball, and girls’ basketball. As the father of an Eagle Scout, I was a part of Boy Scouts of America for ten years, serving as assistant scoutmaster for several years.

I served as chairman of the Winter Sports Committee, a fund-raising organization which provided money for two high school snow-ski teams. Each school had approximately forty team members. I was chairman of this program for five years and served as a coach for six years. Attendance at the last fundraising dinner I participated in was in excess of 1,150 people.

I volunteered as a counselor for S.C.O.R.E. for several years.

I served on the Board of Directors for Do-It Leisure Cooperative, a non-profit organization providing services for handicapped youth.

I am, and have been an active member of Rotary international since 1992.

I am a past President and Vice-President of a local Toastmasters International group, and have won both area and divisional speech contests.

I was a Butte County Honorary Deputy Sheriff for several years.

I have written a monthly article for The Upstate Business Journal and I have written articles for our local real estate magazine.

Personal Notes

Family, friends, and outdoor recreational activities are the focal points of my life. Active outdoor pursuits in a natural environment are my passion. I am an avid water skier and snow skier. Backpacking, weight training, swimming, and biking give me great enjoyment as well. Fishing, hunting, and boating have also been life-long pastimes I continue to enjoy.

I am the proud father of two adult children. My son graduated from the University of California, Santa Cruz, as an honor student and went on to earn a Masters Degree from Harvard University and doctorate in education at Columbia University in New York City. My daughter graduated with honors, from the University of California, Santa Barbara, and went on to graduate with honors from law school at Santa Clara University and now has her own legal practice in Chico. My wife, Norna, has retired from teaching kindergarten at Citrus Elementary School, in Chico and is currently devoting her time to playing tennis, spending time with the grandchildren, and traveling.

I am a life-long student of psychology, philosophy, and personal development. I am a voracious reader, primarily non-fiction, both books and periodicals. During the past twenty years I have developed and maintained an interest in spiritual issues.

I have taught self-enrichment classes as a hobby.
